Efficiency Tailored for Townhomes

Carbon Footprint

While townhome-style condominiums at StreetSide come in many different shapes and sizes, efficiency is always a focus. In general, our townhomes utilize electric-heating over gas in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint. According to research from U.C. Davis, the switch to electric heating can cut your pollution contribution by up to 72% for a far more sustainable lifestyle.

Materials

In addition to incorporating efficient heating, the exterior products selected for StreetSide townhomes are designed to optimize sustainability and energy efficiency. Materials found in our siding, exterior brick, and main structural components often incorporate sustainable products, with one example being our roof shingles sourced from Owens Corning. Not only does Owens produce annual sustainability reports to publicly track their progress, but in 2023 alone, they reduced their landfill contribution by nearly 15%.

Other than products, StreetSide also makes a point of sourcing our materials from suppliers who share our vision of sustainability. Star Building Materials, where materials for parts of the sub-structure of our homes are sourced, practice sustainability through the use of a new technology from MiTek. Components such as trusses are now cut using a MiTek automated saw, which is engineered to reduce discarded lumber while significantly elevating the quality of the product.

Efficiency for Midrise Developments

Every midrise condo development at StreetSide begins the same; During the pre-construction phase, an energy modeling process is conducted to enable for the highest quality decision-making possible when selecting energy-efficient equipment.

Equipment

To support the reduction of carbon emissions, StreetSide communities are incorporating sustainable features such as electric car chargers, which are included in the building plans for developments like Vue Taché, Flora North, and Sage Village. Metro Condominiums in South Osborne takes this commitment a step further as a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), strategically designed to encourage public transit use. Studies show that residents of TODs spend an estimated 16% less time commuting compared to vehicle owners, contributing to a further reduction in carbon emissions.

Heating Efficiency

Windows enable us to see the world from the comfort of our home, but did you know the heat that comes in from them can reduce your home’s energy efficiency? However, this issue can be avoided using Low-E coating, which reflects heat without diminishing light. StreetSide goes a step further with dual low-e coating for enhanced sun protection, optimizing your cooling system. You’ll find this innovative feature in Vue Tache, Sage Village, and The Banks.

On the topic of heat, Geothermal heating, a method of heating that involves harnessing the energy below the earth’s surface, has been a focus of recent StreetSide developments. Geothermal heating is already utilized in past communities such as Bridgwater Forest North and The MIX, but initial designs for our upcoming development at The Forks known as Pilot & Porter include a full geothermal heating and cooling system. This system is anticipated to elevate Pilot & Porter as one of our most energy-efficient designs to date.

Earned Designations

Thanks to these efforts and more, multiple StreetSide communities have earned the Certified Energy Efficient designation from Efficiency Manitoba, —an achievement that signifies energy performance at least 10% better than the minimum standard. Communities such as The Rise Condominiums and Vue Taché have already received this recognition, while projections indicate that both Sage Village and The Banks are also on track to achieve certification.
